Mastering Heat Loss & Heat Gain Calculations

August 28 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Selecting the right heat pump starts with accurate heat loss and heat gain calculations — a critical step in ensuring energy efficiency, comfort, and system longevity.

This interactive in-person training will equip HVAC professionals, raters, and contractors with the essential skills to properly size equipment for diverse building conditions. We’ll provide hands-on practice, guiding participants through real-world load calculations using HVAC ST software that is based on Manual J calculations. Attendees will input data, analyze results, and refine calculations to ensure proficiency in accurate heat loss and heat gain assessments.

While the class will use the HVAC ST tool, the information learned through this process will inform the accuracy of heat loss & heat gain calculations regardless of the software individual contractors may use in their businesses.

Participants will explore best practices, common pitfalls, and real-world scenarios to avoid costly oversizing/undersizing mistakes. Whether you’re new to load calculations or looking to refine your approach, this course provides the technical knowledge and practical application needed to make informed, data-driven decisions.

Why Attend?

✅ Learn essential HVAC load calculations
✅ Avoid costly oversizing/undersizing mistakes
✅ Earn continuing education credits (BPI, OR CCB, NATE) – at no cost!

What You’ll Learn:

  • Understand the significance of accurate heat loss and heat gain calculations in HVAC system selection and performance.
  • Review Manual J calculations and the impacts of different building characteristics on the heating and cooling loads
  • Analyze key variables — including R-values, ACH rates, duct multipliers, and solar heat gain — to determine their impact on load calculations.
  • Assess cooling load considerations, such as window orientation and solar gain factors, to optimize HVAC system sizing.
  • Apply climate-specific strategies to adjust load calculations and improve energy efficiency in diverse building conditions.
